    BASSETLAW Council has no practice of prayers in meetings, the authority has confirmed, following controversy elsewhere in the country. In a case against Bideford Town Council, in Devon, a judge ruled its practice of prayers before meetings breached the Local Government Act. This week, a Bassetlaw Council spokesman confirmed that there is no constitutional provision for prayers at council meetings in place at the authority.

    BURGLARS have made off with cash and paintball guns after a break-in at a Misson home. The crime took place at a property in Coronation Avenue on February 9 between 2.30pm and 7.46pm. Offenders gained entry by forcing a rear dining room window with an unknown object. They then locked the victim's dog in the living room and searched all of the rooms.     POLICE officers and the force's helicopter were involved in the arrest of two men suspected of digging out a badger sett in Ranby. The incident happened at 2.40pm on February 4, on land at Morton Hall Farm. Notts Police arrested a 20-year-old man on suspicion of interfering with a badger sett and a 24-year-old man for the same alleged offence, as well as allegedly assaulting a police officer.     IN THE RUNNING:  Carolgate could benefit if Retford is successful in becoming a town in the Government's Portas Pilots scheme.
    FUNDING of up to £100,000 could be Retford's, if town businesses can convince the Government to invest in its retail infrastructure. Business owners will meet tomorrow to discuss how best to present the town, and even how to pitch for the cash via YouTube.
