THE region's main water company has warned against complacency about water levels despite the recent downpour.

Recent rainfall across the Severn Trent region should help boost reservoir-held water supplies, but the company says it is still keeping an eye on the weather situation.

"Of course the rain we've been seeing around our region in the last week or so will begin to make a difference, but we can't afford to be complacent," said Martin Kane, customer services director for Severn Trent Water. "Unless we see a return to seasonal average rainfall we cannot rule out restrictions later in the year."

On average, reservoir levels now stand at 80 per cent and it will take some time to recover.

For that to happen, more rainfall is needed over a period of days and weeks.

"We are continuing to focus on conserving supplies and fixing leaks. Our leakage levels are now at an all time low, but customers can still help by reporting leaks to us either on our website at www.stwater.co.uk or on our dedicated phone line 0800 783 4444," said Mr Kane.

"So we're not out of the woods yet, and we can all continue to play our part by using water wisely – whether it's at home, in the garden or at work."
